The interviewees in the podcast spoke about the differences between the novel and the television series, and many seemed to think that the book was more radical in its refusal to allow for the handmaids' heroic triumph or escape from the system. Other critics included in the podcast saw the novel as more complex in its treatment of language. Yet the tv series has been celebrated for being innovative and aesthetically interesting. In your final assessment, can the series stand on its own as an important text, as opposed to being simply a popular event? Were there any ways in which the series improved upon the novel?

1.) What are the responsibilities of writers who adapt novels into TV series or films, particularly when creating new storylines that extend past the source material’s conclusion? Do they have any obligation to remain true to the original author’s intentions? Do they have any obligation to change or modernize older works?

The Handmaids Tale television series has been criticized for its failure to consider racial dynamics, and ignoring the ways in which sexism intersects with racism. At the same time, we know that anti-feminist rhetoric is a powerful gateway today to violent white nationalism. Controlling white female sexuality and reproduction is vital to all stands of replacement theory. Do you think the series failed with regards to race? How might the writers have better addressed the considerations of race that Atwood makes clear in the book were part of the creation of Gilead?

Does the adaptation of the novel to the television show take into account any modern commentary on feminine oppression that wasn't included in the novel? Or, on the other hand, are there any commentaries in the novel that are left out of the television adaptation?

Do you think through the tv adaption of The Handmaid’s Tale, it is taking away from the initial purpose of dystopian novels (pretty much sticking it to the man to put it generally ) and is instead exploiting women’s gross mistreatment for monetary gains?

Western and Eastern cultures are really different from what another. Of course, we all know that Eastern countries are mostly Asian, and Western countries are in America or Europe. While there are lots of differences in our culture, I still believe that will all be able to enjoy life together one day. The fact that we have progressed passed our racial slurs in the past tells me that we can change. I hope that we can all change as we go on with our lives.
